Preventing Fish Escapes
September 1st, 2008 by AndrewArne Fredheim from SINTEF has drawn some work on preventing escapes to our attention.
Escape of fish is widely acknowledged as a key environmental problem of sea-based aquaculture.
Culturing fish in sea-cages is widespread and the industry is in a phase of expansion.
Knowledge of the extent and causes of escapes is improving, but there is limited information about differences between species.
The research conducted by the Prevent Escapes Consortium seek ways to prevent escapes of fish from sea-based farms and reduce their environmental effects when an escape event occurs.
