Fish Oil Can Help Congestive Heart Failure
November 16th, 2008 by MaadhuHere is a new published study showing that taking fish oil can reduce the risk of death in patients with heart failure. An Italian study showing the benefits of fish oil was just published in the Lancet (a prestigious medical journal). This study also showed that heart patients who take fish oil are less likely to be hospitalized.
The results show that those given the fish oil were 9% less likely to die during that 4 year period. The difference went from 9% to 14% when researchers examined the 5,000 patients who took the capsules once a day as directed (I think this means some patients didn’t take their medicine as directed). The number of those admitted to hospital for arrhythmias fell by 28% during the same period.
Luigi Tavazzi of the National Association of Hospital Cardiologists (Italy) said ”Our study shows that the long-term administration of one gram per day of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid was effective in reducing both all-cause mortality and admissions to hospital for cardiovascular reasons.

While I agree that there are certain health benefits in the consumption of limited quantities of fish oil, it seems that the evidence is a bit of a mixed bag.
The US National Institutes of Health lists three conditions for which fish oil and other omega-3 sources are most highly recommended: hypertriglyceridemia, secondary cardiovascular disease prevention and high blood pressure. It then lists 27 other conditions for which there is less evidence.
It also lists possible safety concerns: “Intake of 3 grams per day or greater of omega-3 fatty acids may increase the risk of bleeding, although there is little evidence of significant bleeding risk at lower doses. Very large intakes of fish oil/omega-3 fatty acids may increase the risk of hemorrhagic (bleeding) stroke.”
Everything in moderation, I guess. The US National Institutes of Health reference is here:

I read an artcle by New Town Naturopathic Centre and they too suggest that the best way is to modulate the balance of “good” and “bad” eicosanoids. The good eicosanoids are good for; prvent blood clots, Dilate blood vessels, Reduce pain, decrease cell division, enhance the immune system and improve the brain function.
The bad eicosanoids are said to be good for; promote blood clots, Contrict blood vessels, promote pain, promote cell division, depress the immune system and depress the brain function.
With those findings I also reckon that fish Oil can be of benefit if there is a striking balance in its usage.
